Interview with Jesko von Oeynhausen

$

Digital Photography Review interviews Jesko von Oeynhausen of Leica at Photokina 2012, which reveals some interesting tidbits. For example, Leica didn't want to call the new camera the M10, nor keep selling the M9 as-is so people wouldn't get the feeling that the "new" cameras make the old ones suddenly yesterday's news. Definitely worth a read.

Photokina 2012 is proving a busy show for Leica, with two new M models, the 'M', which succeeds the M9, and offers live view and movie mode, among other refinements, and the ME - a cut-down model, which offers the same functionality as the M9 at a more affordable price. Barnaby Britton caught up with M product manager Jesko von Oeynhausen at the Leica stand.

Jesko, there is a perception among some photographers that the M-series has up to now been a deliberately old-fashioned product line. The new Leica M features live view and movie mode - what has changed since the M9 was released?

The new M is a camera that extends the possibilities of the M system. With live view you can do things that you couldn't do on an M9-P or on any other M camera. The rangefinder is great for photography with wide-angle or standard tele lenses but it is limited to 135mm, so you cannot use large tele lenses, and to get accurate focus takes experience. These limitations are overcome now that we have live view and an electronic viewfinder option. Also zoom lenses are not possible on a classic M model because you're always dependent on the frame lines, but with live view, now you can use zooms, and macro lenses, too.

This is really a revolution for the M system - you can do everything now.

Are these changes that your customers were asking for?

Yes, they were asking for these functions. But at the same time our customers are asking us not to change the essence and keep M as a pure rangefinder system. This is what we have done with the new M - you can do pure rangefinder photography, you don't need to use the live view or video or anything if you don't want to. But if you need it, it's very easy to access. The design of the camera hasn't changed, basically. Only minor things.

How did you achieve the goal of maintaining a traditional purity but adding features?

In the same way as we always do, when making decisions regarding operation - we always want to have everything available directly, and easy to understand, and we added [the new functionality] in an easy way - we just added two buttons: the live view button, which is very simple, on/off, and the movie button. If you don't use [them] everything is like an M9. You have the same buttons, they might look a little different but they have the same functionality, so if you're used to using an M9 you will immediately find what you're looking for.

If there is something that we think is very nice to have for every customer, like focusing with live view, we add a button. We have a dedicated focusing button now, so if you're in live view, you press this button and you can zoom [for accurate manual focus].

The new M features a movie mode - is this something your customers were asking for, too?

Yes, not every customer, but we know that this function will be very attractive amongst some professional and professional users who want to use M lenses for video. This is such a compact solution, you can remain unobtrusive, shooting video with the M, but maintain professional quality. I think the M is the only solution for people who want to use M lenses for shooting video on a full-frame camera. So if you want to film wide-open on a Noctilux, without a crop factor, the M is the solution.

The new Leica M features a 24MP CMOS sensor, live view, and movie mode. The screen has been upgraded to 920k-dots, and you can also attach an EVF to the hotshoe (which can also accommodate a microphone adapter for video)

Can you explain the nomenclature change, from M8, M9 to 'M'?

We don't want to give our customers the feeling that when the M10 comes out, for instance, that the M9 is suddenly the 'old' model and they have to buy the new one because the old one isn't good enough anymore. We decided that the continuous numbering concept is not the right thing for us in the long term. The Porsche 911 for instance has always been the Porsche 911. The Leica M is a timeless product, and this is what the naming should express.

What are your biggest challenges in the market now, for M?

To produce enough cameras to meet demand! Also, we know that we have two kinds of professional customers [now]. Most of our customers will love the new features, and love live view and video, and everything else that the new M can do, but there are also customers that really want a camera that is reduced to the essentials of rangefinder photography. Maybe they are critical of [features like] live view and video. So we wanted to have a solution for them, which is the ME. It's a great camera, the M9 has proven that it's a great camera.

So the ME is basically an M9?

Technically yes, it's based on the M9, that's no secret, and because we've produced the M9 for three years, all the tools and jigs exist, and they're paid for. So for that reason we can offer the camera at a lower price - 4800 Euros. The only differences are that it does not have a USB socket, and also not the frame line lever on the front. This is the same as the new M.

Why not just sell the M9 at a lower price?

If we had continued the M9 people would have thought 'OK, that's the old camera, I don't want the old one, I want the new one because the new one is the best' but we want to make a statement that there is room for two [new] models. If you're a purist, you can take the ME, and if you're open to new applications, you can have the new M.

Are your customers changing?

Yes, we have observed this, and since the M9 was released we have seen a lot of new customers stepping into the M system. This is the case in every country but especially in Asia, we've reached a lot of new, young customers. The M system is just very popular. You can see that in fashion, for example, too. Last week I was in London, and I found a fashion store that had Leica T-shirts in the window, with old Leicas. Leica cameras are very popular among young people.

These new customers - how to their expectations differ from your existing customer base?

It's the new features - they don't understand why any camera wouldn't have live view - they don't see a reason why a camera would omit that function. Older customers know rangefinders and have always been satisfied [by them] and accept the limitations. But new customers find it hard to understand rangefinder photography and what's so popular about it. The M system is more accessible now that we have these features. But I'm also sure that the new customers, once they've learned how to use the rangefinder they will love it and they will appreciate pure rangefinder photography.

So the new customers are excited about the features of the flagship model, but the enthusiast model, the ME, which is more affordable, lacks these features…

Ah, well now you've got me! Maybe we'll get more new customers with the new M than the ME. We cannot offer M at an entry-level price. We want people to understand that the M system is a family. The M, the ME, and the Monochrom. Three parallel models.

Let's talk about the monochrome quickly. The obvious question is why did you do it?

Why make the Monochrom? Because it just makes sense. In terms of image quality, we always knew that there would be an advantage and we're very pleased that the increase is so easily visible. You really get such crisp images and fine grain and good noise characteristics. People understand that if you have a monochrome sensor you don't need interpolation, the images are more real - more pure. There are real advantages.

How many of your customers shoot exclusively in black and white?

I don't have a precise figure of course, but my perception is that a lot of people set their M cameras to black and white.

Could you quickly summarize the difference between converting color images to black and white in this way, and using the Monochrom?

The characteristics of the detail, and the noise. Regarding the noise, it's not just that the Monochrom has a lower level of noise, but if you have a color camera, each noisy pixel is interpolated and blurred, and with the Monochrom this doesn't happen. So you always have the full sharpness. It just looks better.

Older film Leicas have lifespans stretching into the decades - do you think the same is true of the new digital M models? If someone buys an M today, will they still be using it in 60 years time?

I hope so, yes. It's harder than it was with fully mechanical cameras, but this is a unique selling point, I hope, of Leica cameras, that they are an investment, a product that you can have for your lifetime. I don't know how difficult it might be in twenty years to find batteries for these cameras, for example, but we will do everything possible. It's very important for us. For example, we had a problem with M8 displays, that we couldn't repair or replace anymore. In that case, we exchanged those customers' cameras for M9s. Even after the end of the guarantee period, we do not leave you alone if something like that happens.

War and crisis, and the inextricably linked existential moments of life are frequent subjects of Pelle Grins gloomy black-and-white images representing visual highlights of the medium in a time of high-pitched tones. Him to be labeled only as a war photographer, however, would clearly fall short, because the funeral of Pope John Paul, fashion shows and Hollywood's elite, he begins with his distinctive look in. The recently emerged portraits of famous actors are now considered classics of the genre. Always the man at the center of Pelle Grins work, justly known of the great humanist photographer Gilles Peress (Salomon Prize 1995) and Josef Koudelka as his role models.

As we wrote about earlier, rumors pointed to a new Leica camera at PhotoPlus Expo. Today was the opening day of the PhotoPlus Expo which is taking place at the Javits Center in NYC. Today Leica has announced a "reimagined"D-Lux 6 camera available in high-gloss black and silver finish.

The classic compact Leica Camera reimagined with a high-gloss and silver finish.

Solms, Germany (October 24, 2013) – Leica Camera AG, presents a new design twist on the Leica D-Lux 6 digital compact camera. With an existing version in elegant, matte-black, the camera is now available in a high-gloss, two-color finish. The new high-gloss black camera body paired with the silver-colored lens creates a tasteful contrast that results in a sophisticated, stylish appearance.

The silver lens of the Leica D-Lux 6 is a Leica DC-Vario-Summilux lens. The varied range of focal lengths makes the camera particularly versatile, ideal for everything from wide-angle architectural and landscape photography to photojournalism and portraits. Combined with a powerful 1/1.7” CMOS image sensor, this camera guarantees a high dynamic range and brilliant images that capture life’s greatest moments.

The Leica D-Lux 6 offers a comprehensive range of features, including automatic mode, manual setting options and optional accessories, like an electronic viewfinder with 1.4 million pixels, which provide even greater creative freedom in all areas of photography. Full HD video recording capability is also included in this newest version of the D-Lux 6. The camera records a perfect rendition of fast-moving subjects in outstanding detail. Video data can be saved in Internet-compatible MP4 format and can be uploaded directly to social media or mobile devices without any need for conversion. Crystal-clear sound recording is guaranteed by special wind-noise filter that reduces undesirable noise.

Both versions of the Leica D-Lux 6 are available from Leica dealers. A new addition to the range of accessories for the Leica D-Lux 6 is the Leica Soft Pouch in lambskin nappa leather: black, stylish and with a fascinating wrap-around design, this leather case is a perfect complement to any outfit.

Ché, Wars and Art: The Life of René Burri

Over on DiePresse.com they're running a piece called, "Ché, Wars and Art: The Life of René Burri" (in German). A story about the Swiss Magnum photographer René Burri and his trusted Leica M2 (produced from 1958 to 1967 - his is from 1962). Ironically, he "scratched off" his Red Dot to deter thieves; something some of us might be familiar with... In any event, he plans to auction the camera on May 23, 2014 in Wetzlar, Germany for the 100th birthday of Leica Camera. If you're not familiar with René Burri, you may recall some of his photos; the picture of Ché Guevara smoking a cigar from 1963 perhaps. Or the photo of Picasso at a bullfight. In fact, the 2014 LFI Calendar features 12 of his photos!

Translation to English (via Google):

The Swiss has written with the image Chés with cigar or Picasso at a bullfight photo story. Now he shows his photos in Vienna.

It is a camera that has seen the world. A Leica M2, built in 1962. The red dot, the hallmark, René Burri has scraped a long time. To protect his camera from thieves. And because he had paid for his camera, wanted to make an advertisement for the manufacturer, as he says. Soon someone will pay for this camera again. Probably tens of thousands of euros.

Finally, René Burri, the great Swiss Magnum photographer, brought his old Leica Peter Coeln, founder of the West and Ostlicht galleries to Vienna. And that she wants 23 May be auctioned at an auction on the occasion of the 100-year anniversary in Leica Wetzlar, Germany. The ideal value of the camera is probably not to pay, after all she has, René Burri worn for decades around the neck. He had this Leica in hand, when he was in Havana for three hours Ché Guevara photographed in 1963, as he spoke to a journalist. His image of Ché with the cigar was a million times reproduces an icon. It says Burri, he had back when he switched in the Industry Ministry in Havana, no idea that one of these images would be so famous.

Life in color and black-and-white

For in the moment in which he pulls the trigger, he never knew whether it is a good picture. And finally he had to "fight like a lion" that the image with the cigar is ever printed, and then there was also severely curtailed. The Leica was created with the image Burri had 40 years there. In wars, with artists such as Pablo Picasso, whom he photographed while visiting a bullfight, with Le Corbusier, Alberto Giacometti, Yves Klein, as this naked, young women with color painted.

Is it difficult for him to part with this camera? "No. It's like having children, since one must also be separated, "says Burri in the gallery Ostlicht. The Swiss - today he lives in Paris - has recently come to Vienna to open an exhibition of his paintings. In the gallery Ostlicht in the former anchor bread factory in Vienna's favorite famous black and white photos will be displayed next to largely unpublished color photographs by mid-March Burris. "Double life" is the show, two lives, one in black and white, one in color.

Burri is finally one of the few photographers who have just photographed in color or black and white. And that was considered vulgar, as cheesy in a time when color photography. Even with Magnum, he says, is color long "almost frowned upon" was. Burri is since 1959 a full member of the prestigious Magnum agency. He began to photograph, born 1933, already in 1946. Back when Winston Churchill is driven by Zurich in an open car, pushing the 13-year-old from Burri with his flip camera. Already this photo went round the world. From 1950 he settled in Zurich train to the photographer, from the mid-fifties he works worldwide as a photojournalist for magazines such as "Life", "look", "star", "Geo".

Documented war, world politics, everyday scenes, portraits of artists. He was, he says, probably the most widely traveled of the Magnum photographer. Once he had the goal, with his pictures to improve the world. So he came to Beijing and São Paulo, Tokyo and Texas, he has held street canyons in New York, combat missions in Vietnam, at Sinai or the Suez Canal. And everywhere Burri was, he had at least two cameras here: one for black and white and one for color photography.

The camera as a notebook

He knows both Metiers showing the exhibition of the Museum of Design Zurich, which is now on display in Vienna: his black and white series show nuanced portraits, games with prospects, shades, some famous Burris picture series, supplemented by its color images . Most individual photographs that have surprising perspectives or compositions, and where the use of color follows strict laws. The homage to the 80s shows how he approaches and themes, draws his life after photographers. His many lives. In bright colors and without, as a documentarian of wars, as a photojournalist, as an artist.

Still bears Burri always a Leica around his neck. Today it is a digital one. "It's amazing, the digital," he says, finally, he no longer need to think about movies, can store 1500 photos on a map. And so he photographed still. The audience, in which he sits, while talking to the exhibition opening. Old friends who stop by. The tray with bun, which is placed on the table during the interview. "This camera," he says, raises his Leica in his hand, "today is like my notebook, I'm still interested!"

Jim Marshall Gets Grammy Posthumously

While you might not recognize the name, you've surely seen his photos over the years. Jim Marshall was a photographer of rock stars, and shot primarily with Leica gear. In fact, the background of his website features a huge Leica background. He had extended access to numerous musicians through the 1960s and 1970s, including being the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles last concert, and chief photographer at Woodstock. He's photographed the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Cream, The Who, Allman Brothers, Miles Davis, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane - the list goes on and on. Over on the Grammy website, they've got a news blurb called "Trustees Award: Jim Marshall" featuring a tribute by Henry Diltz and Graham Nash.

There's an interesting background piece on TOP called "Artists Ain't Saints: Jim Marshall, 1936-2010." The Washington Post ran this story when he died on March 26, 2010. There's also an in-depth piece over on Autoweek called "Cars, guns and cameras: The life of Jim Marshall" - which happens to feature Leica Store LA which will hold an exhibition of his work.

One of Jim Marshall's Leica M4s

Jim Marshall was my guru. He told me so himself. He was the guru of most of today's music photographers because he was one of the first and one of the best. His mantra was "Get the picture!"

I met him in the mid-'60s. He worked mostly in San Francisco and I worked mostly in L.A., but our paths crossed at the Monterey Pop Festival and at Woodstock, and then more often as the years went by.

There are many colorful adjectives that come to mind when remembering Jim: irascible, impatient, explosive, but always very, very kindhearted. He liked to drink and tell stories and he loved pretty women. "Cars, guns and cameras always get me into trouble," he used to say. He brooked no denial as he waded right in with his little Leica clicking quietly and constantly. His eye was amazing as he caught the essence of each scene before him. His subjects loved his energy and commitment to the moment. He was always very much in the moment.

I had always known Jim for his photos of San Francisco's rich music scene: the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, and Santana. I knew his famous photo of Johnny Cash giving the finger (a message to the warden of the San Quentin State Prison), but I was totally unprepared for the breadth of his subject matter the day I walked into a gallery in L.A.'s Bergamot Station that was exhibiting his work. There were several big rooms whose walls were completely covered with his photos from floor to ceiling with no space in between. I saw old blues singers, civil rights marches, baseball players, famous comedians, beatniks, hippies, and jazz musicians. I never saw so many pictures on a wall in my life. That huge collection of images is his living gift to us all.

Jim had no family as long as I knew him; his family was his friends, all of whom have hilarious and harried "Jim" stories they love to share. Some involve guns, some involve drugs, all involve the "F" word (his favorite), and all include an awe and a warm feeling for the man we all loved.

We still love you, Jim!

— Henry Diltz

The world is a better place because of the talent and vision of my friend Jim Marshall. He, of course, took countless iconic photographs over the years and always brought a deeper insight into the world of photography and music. His images can be likened to haiku poetry: everything in its proper place … no "extra" information … only the very essences necessary to convey what he wants us to see. Never one to be dissuaded from a good shot, he opened our eyes to the wonders of his portraits. Jim's images always have a sense of completeness and his ability to compose instantly is renowned. It's possible that I took the last portrait of Jim shortly before his untimely passing. Jim may be gone but his images will absolutely stand the test of time and be around for us to see and enjoy for years to come.

— Graham Nash
